“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.” ― Winston S. Churchill
As the deadline to register and vote for the EU referendum looms, the main question still remains: is this a time when the UK will actually commit a suicide or decide to make an effort and make the future a place where everyone is looking forward to make it better ?
Plato on Democracy:
Corresponding to the faculty of reason is the smallest class of people—scientists, scholars, high-level experts, and similar sophisticates. Plato calls them “lovers of wisdom,” i. e., “philosophers.” Their most passionate interests are understanding and knowledge, and their greatest pleasure a lively life of the mind.
As a just and healthy person is governed by knowledge and reason, a just society must be under the control of society’s most cultivated and best informed minds, its “lovers of wisdom.” Just societies cannot be run by big money or armed forces with their too narrow agendas. Limitless desire for wealth and blind ambition must be watched and contained as potential public dangers. The most informed minds must determine objectively, with due consideration of all points of view, what the most healthy and practical goals for the commonwealth are.
“Until philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit and power of philosophy, … cities will never have rest from their evils,” as Plato suggests in the Republic. (3)
Idiocracy is a 2006 American satirical science fiction comedy film directed by Mike Judge and starring Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, and Terry Crews. The film tells the story of two people who take part in a top-secret military hibernation experiment, only to awaken 500 years later in a dystopian society where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism have run rampant and that is devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights.
Now the statistics:
University educated people are most likely to want to stay in the EU
When it comes to social class and education, those who went to university are most likely to be pro-EU – with seven out of ten UK graduates wishing to remain in Europe, according to the polls.
Those belonging to the AB social class – usually in higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations – support the EU by 62 to 38 per cent.
So, the one question remains to be answered:
In handling of the things you do not know about and cannot envisage the outcome of your decisions
Do you trust more the faculty of reason: is the smallest class of people—scientists, scholars, high-level experts, and similar sophisticates.
